DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Advisor, Communicable Diseases Prevention, Control and Elimination
• Join us and contribute to advancing disease prevention, control and elimination in the Region of the Americas
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO), is seeking a highly qualified and results‑driven Advisor, Communicable Diseases Prevention, Control and Elimination to provide technical cooperation and strategic advice to national health authorities in the surveillance, prevention, control and elimination of communicable diseases, contributing to strengthened health systems and improved public health outcomes.
Under the technical guidance of the Director, Communicable Diseases Prevention, Control and Elimination (CDE) and the direct supervision of the PAHO/WHO Representative (PWR), the selected candidate will:
• Provide technical cooperation to national health authorities on the implementation of programs and initiatives related to the prevention, control and elimination of communicable diseases.
• Support disease surveillance, epidemiological analysis, and evidence‑based public health interventions.
• Strengthen national capacities for diagnosis, patient management, and control of communicable diseases, including outbreak preparedness and response.
• Promote interprogrammatic collaboration and coordination with partners, academic institutions and other sectors.
• Support the implementation of the International Health Regulations (IHR), including alert, preparedness and response to outbreaks.
• Contribute to policy development, research coordination, and dissemination of scientific and technical information.

What is required for this position?
Education
A bachelor’s degree in a health discipline related to the post, and a master’s degree in epidemiology, public health or any other field related to the functions of the position, from a recognized university.
Experience
Nine years of combined national and international experience working in epidemiology and control programs or in the administration of health services related to the control of diseases, health analysis and statistics. Practical managerial experience in the operational aspects of prevention and control programs.
Languages
Very good knowledge of English or Spanish with a working knowledge of the other language.
IT Skills
Demonstrated ability to effectively use current technology and software, spreadsheets and presentations, as well as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and management information systems. Other IT skills and knowledge of software programs such as Microsoft Excel, Outlook, OneDrive, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, and Word are considered essential.

• Theoretical and practical expertise in surveillance, prevention, control and elimination of communicable diseases.
• Strong knowledge of epidemiology, public health, and disease control methods.
• Ability to analyze surveillance systems and develop innovative solutions to strengthen disease monitoring and response.
• Experience in planning, implementing and evaluating public health and disease control programs.
• Knowledge and practical expertise in International Health Regulations (IHR), outbreak control and public health emergencies.
• Strong analytical, oral and written communication skills, including preparation of technical reports and policy documents.
• Ability to work effectively with national authorities, partners and multidisciplinary teams in complex public health environments.
Duration of Contract
Post of limited duration. First year probationary period.
